Fab4 remote PB1 - 01/29/09
Test sample: complete - board with plastics
- Version (sticker attached on board and to the outside): Fab4-PB1-028
- Board revision: FAB4-PA2 / 2008-12-24
Changes to previous version tested
- Slightly improved angle
- about 32 degrees at 6 meters (was 30 degrees)
- Different transistor driving the IR LED
Overview
The remote features 29 functions (keys) of which all are functional and the IR commands sent out are correct and understandable by SB3, TR, SBB and Fab4. Favorites, Browse and Search correctly send out the current (and not the modified) codes as expected of this version (PB1).
The top is black soft touch the back is black high gloss. The case is less tall than TRs candy bar remote and the round back makes it very comfortable when holding it. The soft touch is very pleasing and the keys work well. All in all it's a very nice feeling and looking remote that matches with Fab4.
The battery compartment is easy to open and at the same time closes firmly enough. The lens in front of the IR LED seems not to harm distance or angle. The remote uses two AAA batteries and has (as designed) no backlight for the buttons.
Range and angle
Tested against an SBB and Fab4 in normal daylight lit room conditions.
- About 40 degrees in each direction at 4.5 meters
- About 32 degrees in each direction at 6 meters
Technical
The IC SHT2222-001 is the same as is used in SBB's remote, however the modification (2.2k resistor and diode) from the datasheet I proposed to switch from one-shot to continuous transmission mode has been applied. The modification is now incorporated into the PCB layout.
Layout

Fab4 remote - 11/05/08
Test sample: board only - no plastics
- Board revision: FAB4-PA1 / 2008-10-11
Overview
The remote features 29 functions (keys) of which all are functional and the IR commands sent out are correct and understandable by SB3, TR or SBB.
There are no backlights for the buttons.
Since I only got the board I cannot say anything about how the buttons feel or about the case or battery compartment. Also I don't know if there will be a lens in front of the IR diode, like on SBB's remote, or none, like on TR's remote. This might or might not influence the performance (range / angle).
Range and angle
Tested against an SBB in normal daylight lit room conditions.
- About 20 degrees in each direction at 4.5 meters

Technical
The IC SHT2222-001 is the same as is used in SBB's remote, however the modification (2.2k resistor and diode) from the datasheet I proposed to switch from one-shot to continuous transmission mode has been applied. It looks like Wanlida got it stable after all.
BTW: The fix is not reflected in the board layout, but was added as an afterthought by lifting the base of the transistor and adding the resistor and adding the diode and a wire over the IC.
I used two 1.5V batteries for my testing assuming it will be the same as we use for the TR remote.
